Department of Transportation has lowered the
speed limit on a stretch of U.S. Hwy 280
outside Abbeville in response to concerns
for the safety of children entering and
exiting school buses.
The speed limit has been changed from 55 mph to 45 mph at milepost 17.90, west of Kingfisher Road (formerly Johnny King Road. The speed limit remains 45 until milepost 18.64, 100 feet west of Industrial Drive.
The new speed limit is being enforced now.
The speed limit was lowered on a stretch that includes multiple school bus stops. A hill near one of these stops creates a marginal sight distance, which prompted a local request for the speed there to be re-evaluated.
