In Memoriam

The Honorable Glenn Dorsey

1943-2014

Mr. Alec Glenn Dorsey, 70, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at Houston Medical Center.  Mr. Dorsey was born in Macon on September 29, 1943, to James B. “Jake” and Nina Claire Tabor Dorsey.

An Army veteran, he retired as chief magistrate of Wilcox County after 35 years of service. Mr. Dorsey served as mayor of Abbeville for eight years and was president of Dorsey Chevrolet, Dorsey State Bank and Dorsey Oil Company. He was president of the Abbeville Lions Club for eight years and had a 40-year perfect attendance record.

He enjoyed the annual Dorsey family reunion held by the descendants of his grandparents and his interest in genealogy made him the family historian.

Mr. Dorsey was also the secretary of the Georgia Magistrates Association from its formation until his retirement in 2014. A graduate of Abbeville High School, he graduated from Emory at Oxford in 1963 and from Georgia Southern University in 1966. He served in the Navy from 1966-1968.

In recognition of his service to the citizens of Wilcox County, he lay in repose in the Courhouse Routunda.  The Georgia flag at the Wilcox County Courthouse, where he spent so many hours, was flown at half-staff until after his funeral.

Survivors included: wife of 39 years, Kay Williamson of Abbeville, and brother Jim (Maurine) Dorsey of Sandy Springs.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Union Baptist Church, the church founded by his great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents in 1860 near present-day Pitts.  Internment was in the church cemetery.

Flowers are accepted, and memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Frazier and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
